Matt Carter and Ely Cornwell share the lead after the first round of the Spartanburg County Amateur being played at the Carolina Country Club.

Both golfers posted scores of 4-under par 68 to hold a one shot lead over this year’s Spartanburg County Junior Champion Daniel Brasington.

Carter got to his 4-under par total without making a bogey on the day.

A run of three straight birdies on holes 4,5 and 6 and one back side birdie helped the former USC Upstate golfer to his portion of the lead.

Cornwell did not escape carding a bogey, but he finished his back nine with four birdies on his last six holes to tie Carter.

Brasington’s 3-under par 69 was one shot better than former champion Kyle Milner. Milner shot a 2-under par 70.

Only five gofers were able to post under par rounds to start the tournament.

Evan Edwards was the only other golfer under par. He stands at 1-under in fifth place going into the second round.
