Roberts and Brasington claim big wins

The Morgan Lucas championship has become an early season showcase for some of the best juniors in South Carolina on one of the state’s top golf courses.

Seventy-five juniors teed off at the Greenville Country Club’s Chanticleer course in the first event on the SCJGA’s 2020 schedule exclusively for Palmetto State golfers.

Sydney Roberts from Chesnee led the girls championship from start to finish while Daniel Brasington from Woodruff did the same in the boys division.

Roberts, who won the Upstate Junior last summer and was the top golfer on the Chesnee High School’s AAA state second place team, shot a 1 over par 73.

Her first round score was good enough to hold a 4-shot lead over the 2019 SCJGA Player of the year MK Talledo from Boiling Springs.

In the second round Talledo improved her score by a shot while Roberts did the same. The second round ended up just like the first round.

Roberts two-day total of 145 was enough for a three-shot victory over Talledo while Sarah Boteler from Greenville finished third.

“This win means a lot to me because of being my first and being able to put two rounds together that were consistent,” said Roberts.

Brasington, who won the Spartanburg County Junior Championship in 2019, opened with a 68. The 4-under par round gave the future Wofford Terrier golfer a one shot lead over Matthew Hutto from Blythewood.

The Woodruff High School senior played his final round at 1-under par for a two-day total of 139 and a two shot victory.

Just as in the girls championship, the boys field included many juniors who already had major victories. Zach Adams from Charleston was the defending champion and Mason Tucker from Lancaster earned three major titles in 2019.

Brasington played a consistent final round being kept on his game by the fine play of the other two golfers in his group.

“It was a great pairing today that helped me forget about the tournament aspect and focus on having fun and making good shots.” said Brasington.

While Jerry Bruns shot a second round 3-under par 69 to move up to second. Brasington’s other two golfers Hutto and Ford Reynolds from Columbia finished in a tie for third place.

The Morgan Lucas Championship was presented by Marchant Real Estate.

The event began as a team championship, but over the years the event has become an individual stroke play championship.
