Phillips and Schimpf win Fall Challenge Championships

Zach Phillips won his second SCJGA Championship of the Fall and Emma Schimpf won her second tournament in two weeks as both golfers finished on top of the leader board at the South Carolina Junior Golf Association’s Fall Challenge tournaments.

It took Zach Phillips awhile to get a win in an SCJGA event, but now he has won two in a row.

The Boiling Springs High School golfer led from start to finish to win the boys championship at the Fall Challenge.

The tournament was played at Cheraw State Park and Phillips jumped out to the first round lead and never looked back.

He had a 1-shot lead after the first round and finished with a 2-shot victory.

Phillips won his first SCJGA championship when he finished on top at the Harvey Brock Orange Jacket championship at Brookstone in Anderson.

His 2-day total of 138 included only one bogey in the 36 hole championship. He finished 2-shots in front of Griffin Tarver from Tega Cay.

Adam Hunt from Columbia was third with Greenville’s Tip Price finishing in fourth place.

Ashton Eubanks from Lexington and Trey Crenshaw from Lancaster tied for fifth place.

Phillips victory matches wins by his two older brothers in the same event. Trevor won the title on 2014 and Trent won the 2016 championship.

Last week Daniel Island’s Emma Schimpf won the South Carolina High School girls AAA-AA-A individual state title.

Somewhat amazingly the same girls who competed for the state title a week ago in the high school championship were the same golfers Schimpf topped for the SCJGA tourney win.

Schimpf trailed Kennedy Gooding from Gilbert after the first round, but made up the one stroke difference on Sunday to claim medalist honors in the championship.

Schimpf shot rounds of 73 and 72 for a 1-over par 145 total to win the tournament by a shot over Gooding.

Two other golfers who were contenders for the state high school championship finished in third and fourth place.

Sydney Roberts, the runner-up to Schimpf in the high school championship, finished fourth while Kennedy McGaha from Honea Path was third.
