It was a difficult day for the top seeds at the US Women’s Amateur. Seven of the top eight seeds were eliminated in first round matches on Wednesday.
One of the highly seeded casualties was 2nd seed Kennedy Pedigo from Texas. She was knocked out of the national championship by Jensen Castle from West Columbia.
The University of Kentucky golfer won her match 3 & 2 to advance to the round of 32. Castle was 2-up after the first two holes and made the lead stand up to move along in the championship.
Top seed Rachel Kuehn from Asheville was eliminated by Marissa Wenzler from Dayton, Ohio 1 up. Kuehn birdied the 16th hole to pull within one, but was not able to produce a win on either of the last two holes.
Furman’s Anna Morgan won her round of 64 match 1 up over Cory Lopez of Mexico.
The Lady Paladin golfer from Spartanburg won the first four holes of the match. Lopez birdied the 14th hole to close within one of Morgan, but both golfers matched scores on the last four holes sending Morgan to the next round.
In the Round of 32 Castle, who was seeded 63rd, will match up with 34th seeded Sophie Linder.
The rising high school junior recently won the Tennessee state Junior and Women’s Open title in the same week.
Linder won her first round match over Bridget Ma from Florida in 22 holes.
Morgan will also face a golfer who recently won two big tournaments in her state.
The Furman rising junior will match up with 15th seed Jenny Bae. The University of Georgia golfer recently won the Georgia Women’s Open and the Georgia Women’s Amateur Championship.
Bae defeated 50th seed Bailey Davis from Maryland 3-2 in her round of 64 match.
