Sill wins fourth Spartanburg County Senior Championship

A familiar face took home the trophy at Saturday’s Spartanburg County Senior Amateur Championship at Woodfin Ridge.

Stan Sill won his fourth Senior championship with a 66 on the tournament’s second day, for a two-day total of five-under-par 139.

Sill finished three strokes ahead of Mark Pike and Ronald Pruitt, who tied for second at two-under 142.

Max Fain, Greg Moore, and Alan Stepp tied for fourth at one-over 145.

Sill had a scorching round on Saturday to take control of the event, presented by First Tee Upstate and sponsored by Delaney’s Irish Pub, and Budweiser of Spartanburg.

He made two bogeys and four birdies on the front to go out in 34, and played the 12th-14th holes in four-under. He bogeyed the 15th before a birdie at 16 and a pair of routine pars to close it out.

Sill’s eagle at 14 wasn’t even a knockout blow, as Pike had one of his own to match. But the three-hole stretch was big in the end.

“Mark made it before I did,” Sill said. “Both of us hit it pretty close in there on the par 5 down the hill at 14. He made one from about eight feet, but I had three or four feet for mine. And I’d driven it right off the front of the green on 12, and hit it to about a foot at 13.”

Sill said while the second round score was better, he played well throughout the tournament.

“I played probably just as good or better yesterday, I just messed up a couple times,” he said. “I hit one out of bounds on 9 yesterday. I hit one, I thought was perfect, on 14 that ended up down in the stuff. Yesterday wasn’t much different from today. I made three bogeys today. I just didn’t make as many mistakes.”I just play. Just keep it in front of you and play. It’ll work out.”

Frank Edwards took the win in the Super Seniors division with a one-stroke victory over Roger Page with a two-over 146 to Page’s three-over 147.

Edwards shot a two-under 70 in Saturday’s round, with a birdie-par-birdie finish making the difference.

Teddie McCraw, Jr., Gene Wetmore, and Frank Wilson rounded out the Top 5.

Flight winners included Eric Magera (Flight 2), Michael Hanke (Flight 3), Johnny Smith (Flight 4), and Tom Leopard (Flight 5). Kim Lawrence won Super Seniors Flight 2.
