There wasn’t a lot of turn around time for Greenville County Amateur leader Robbie Biershenk between the first and second rounds.
Biershenk shot an opening round 8-under par 64 and finished around 5:30 on Friday. He had to be on the tee for the second round at 7:50 on Saturday.
The quick turn around didn’t bother Biershenk. He put together a second outstanding round shooting 5-under par 67 to move to 13 under-par for the tournament.
Biershenk’s first round was unusual for making 11 birdies and 3 bogeys.
His second round was unusual because “Shank” made 5-birdies and no, repeat, no bogeys.
His two-day total added a stroke to his 2-shot first round lead, but the competition for the County title now included four golfers who all stand at 10-under par going into Sunday.
In the first round, 2006 County Amateur champion Garland Ferrell shot a 6-under par 66. He carded a second round 68 for a 134 total, but now he shares second place with three other golfers.
Danny Brock, the 2018 County Amateur champion, tied for the tournament’s low round so far, when he signed a card for a 9-under par 63. He jumped up 14 places and into a tie for second.
The two past champions were joined at 10-under par by Zander Briggs and Matthew Hopper.
Briggs shot a 65 to move up to second while Hopper shot a 67 to make it a 4-way tie behind Biershenk.
Brock wasn’t the only golfer going low, former Clemson golfer Crawford Reeves, matched Brocks’ 63 carding 10 birdies in his round to jump from 35th into a tie for 7th at 9-under par.
In the Senior County Amateur Mike Caprio shot a second round 8-under par 64 to tie Kyle Turner for first place.
The two leaders are at 10-under par.
First round leader Dean Nance shot a second round 1-under par 71 and is in third place, 3-shots off the pace.
Congratulations to Jonah Smith on his Hole In One on #15 with an 8-iron.
Because of the threat of bad weather the traditional final round starting times have been adjusted to have the tournament leaders play in the early morning wave.
The leading group in the County Amateur will tee on #1 at 9:40. The leaders in the Senior County Amateur will also tee at 9:40, but will start on #10.
