If this was a big league professional team, someone in the front office would be responsible for covering the lockers with plastic, icing down the champagne and printing championship tee-shirts.
The Chesnee Eagles could be doing all of those things if they were a pro team, but instead the Eagles are the defending South Carolina Class AA state champions.
The temptation to say “it is all over but the shouting” at the Cheraw State Park golf course is pretty strong after the first round.
It is tempting, but it isn’t over and even with a whopping 30 shot lead, the second round must still be played.
Chesnee entered the finals as the defending state AAA-AA-A champion, winning the combined classification title last year at Coastal Carolinas’s Hackler Course in Conway.
This year there were enough teams for the AA Classification to play their own championship and after the first day the result looks very much like last year.
The Eagles were led by Olivia Roberts, the Region Player of the Year, who shot an opening round 76 to finish a shot behind the top individual, Aldera Sanchez from the Academic Magnet School in Charleston.
Three more Eagles joined Roberts in the top-10 after the first round.
Addy Parker was third after carding a 78, Abigail Watson shot an 87 to stand in 7th place with Olivia Shields tied for 10th place.
The final round is scheduled for Tuesday at Cheraw State Park and after the final 18 holes are completed it might be time to celebrate.
