Tigers and Grewal lead the Clemson Invitational

The Clemson Tigers played like they might have known something abut the course at the Reserve.

Playing on their home course, Clemson posted a 7-under par 281 total for the first round lead.

Ole’Miss, the team that edged the Tigers out of a win by a shot, in the first tournament of the season at the Cougar Classic, is second.

Third ranked LSU, the defending Clemson Invitational champs, are third.

The 28th ranked Tigers lead the field that includes eight other ranked teams.

Individually Clemson owns three of the first five places on the leader board.

Savannah Grewal is the individual leader after shooting an opening round 4-under par 68.

Annabelle Pancake, who was the runner-up in Clemson’s last tournament , The Clover Cup, shot a 3-under par 69 to be tied with freshman teammate Sydney Roberts and Virginia Tech’s Morgan Ketchum and Crystal Wang from Illinois for second

The Tigers lead might have been even bigger if Roberts had been playing as part of the team rather than as an individual entrant.

Clemson’s other freshman, Isabella Rawl, playing with the team, finished the day tied for 10th.

Roberts and Rawl both won high school championships in the Palmetto State, one other golfer in the field also was a South Carolina High School champion.

Elle Johnson was a state champion at Spartanburg before playing at Florida State and transferring this year to Ole’ Miss. Johnson is tied for 14th.

Furman opened the tournament in 15th place with the Lady Paladins’ top player Anne Morgan tied for 30th.

The tournament schedule has changed due to the expectation of bad weather on Saturday morning,

Instead of tee times, all golfers will begin play at 1 pm using a shotgun start.
