When the first pre-season coaches rankings came out for AAAAA schools, Hanna was nowhere to be seen.
Defending champion Boiling Springs was on top with Chapin right behind, pretty much the way last season ended.
At the pre-season Red Raider Invitational North Augusta, a AAAA team, ran away with the tournament title, but Hanna beat all the rest, including the defending AAAAA champions,
On Monday the Jackets hosted a new high school tournament that included a very good field from around the Upstate.
In their own event on their home course Hanna finished on top.
The Yellow Jackets shot a 289 total to edge out a 2-shot win over the top ranked AA team in the state from Christ Church.
Individually, Greenville’s Tip Price and Christ Church’s Grooves Williams each shot rounds of 2-under par 70. Williams was awarded the top spot after a scorecard playoff.
During the year teams from all classifications compete in tournaments, but at the end of the year they will play in their individual classification championship.
Hanna’s impressive run from outside the rankings to a tournament victory over two of the top teams (Boiling Springs and Mauldin) in AAAAA would indicate the race for the championship, which will be played at Carolina Country Club in Spartanburg could be wide open.
