Dawson Szabo can’t win money in golf tournaments yet, but he’s already taking I.O.U.s.

Szabo notched his second win in a little less than a week on Tuesday, taking first place in the Greenville Junior Amateur at Holly Tree after winning The Blade Junior Classic last week. Not only did Szabo win his age group, finishing first in the Boys 13-14 Division, he crashed the overall party, as his two-day score of four-under 140 won him the outright tournament crown.

He’ll.have to wait on that trophy. That one’s got to be ordered.

“I knew I was going to come out and shoot a low score here today,” Szabo said of his closing 68. “It just feels good to back it up.”

While he credited his play at The Blade to his putter, Szabo said his approach game carried the day at the Junior.

“The greens are rolling good, I just couldn’t get the speed right,” he said. “I didn’t make as many putts as I did at Thornblade. But I was hitting everything pretty close, and didn’t have to make many 20-footers.”

While Szabo waits for his trophy, the one on site for the 15-18 age group went home with Jack Magera. The former Eastside and future South Carolina golfer finished tied with Owen Kinnunen at two-under for the tournament. Magera birdied the 18th during regulation and Kinnunen made a bomb for eagle, setting up a sudden-death playoff.

Magera had just one thought.

“I hope they send us to 18,” he said aloud. “I can hit driver on 18.”

The playoff went first to 10, and then to 11, where the two remained tied with pars. Then they were shuttled to 18, and Magera got his wish.

He made the most of it, ripping his drive more than 320 yards,then putting his second shot 20 feet from the pin.

“I had 157 in, so that must have been a little juiced,” Magera said with a laugh.

When Kinnunen came up short on his second, chipped on, and missed his birdie putt, Magera knew he could two-putt for the win. His first wound up about a foot short, and he cleaned it up for his birdie and the age-group victory.

“I told the guys coming up (during regulation) that I needed to make eagle, because I didn’t want to go to a playoff,” he said. “I thought I had no chance getting in, because I hadn’t played my best on the back. But I made a birdie from the junk, got in, and I was so happy. It feels great. I really wasn’t supposed to play this. The Blade was supposed to be my last tournament going into college. I’m pretty glad I did this.”

Remy Reynolds won the Girls 13-18 flight with a score of 11-over for the two-day tournament. Spencer Kate Harvey was the Girls 10-12 winner at plus-13.

Cullen Beck was the Boys 10-12 winner, while John Sanabria won the Boys 7-9 division.
