They may have to add some shelves to the the trophy case at Christ Church High School.

The Cavaliers won the schools’ state record 22nd state golf championship.

Christ Church shot an even par round of 288 to win the 2024 Class A state championship played at the Hartsville Country Club.

“Right out of the gate our guys saw St Joe’s start off with three straight birdies and that seemed to help them focus,” said. Cavaliers coach Cody Robertson. “The guys said lets get down to business and we did,” said the first year head coach,

The Cavaliers were led by the Number 1 Junior in the country, William Jennings.

Jennings, like the team, has had a good year. The Cavalier senior won the Pre-season Red Raider Invitational and bookended the season opening win by shooting a 7-under par 65 to claim his second individual state championship.

“William is the hardest worker. He knows what he wants to do and what he has to do to get there. He is a great leader for the team and he played great today,” said Robertson.

While Jennings posted the low number the other four golfers on the Cavalier’s team finished strong.

“Groves Williams has been an All-Tournament machine. It seems like every tournament we played he was a top finisher and made the All-Tournament team. He was the co-champion of the Greenville County, tournament,” recalled the Cavs coach.

Before Robertson moved up to coach the varsity he had been the JV coach. He helped the players develop the foundation for their ability to win a state title.

“We always worked on course management issues. Knowing where to hit it and how to play smart helped our guys win,” he said.

After Jennings ’65 and Williams’ 1-under par 71, Charlie Reyner shot a 76 and the Cavs fourth senior, Banks Williams shot a 77.

The teams fourth counting score for the even par finish was Jenning’s younger brother Heyward who shot a 76.

If anyone thinks the run of seven straight championships may end when the seniors graduate Robertson does not think that will happen.

“Our team is so deep. We have a lot of hungry guys who are coming along and are going to be really good players and keep our streak going,” said the coach..

When you win as much as Christ Church has you can develop a tradition. The Cavs once again celebrated the win wih a team meal at Outback.

“It has been fun as a first year coach to win. You hear a lot of stories about the past teams and I’m glad we were able to keep it going and couldn’t be more excited about our future,” concluded Robertson.
