Chesnee close in on fourth straight state title

Chesnee is threatening to run away with a fourth straight state golf championship.

In the 2A-1A state tournament at Chester Country Club, the Eagles have a 53-shot lead over their nearest competition after a first round 290nthat saw all four of Chesnee’s counting scores in the top seven.

The team 290 set a school record for the Eagles, and is 2-over par for the tournament. Atlantic Collegiate is second at 55-over, with Academic Magnet, McBee, and Brashier Middle College rounding out the top 5.

Individually, Olivia Roberts is again atop the leaderboard for the Eagles, firing a 6-under round of 66 to lead Atlantic Collegiate’s Hannah Lowery by two strokes.

Olivia Shields is fourth, Jada Flynn is sixth, and Addison Parker is seventh for Chesnee.
The Eagles will try to wrap up the title in tomorrow’s second round, with tee times for the leaders beginning at 10:20.

In the 3A state tournament at Coastal Carolina’s Hackler Course, Mountain View Prep is within striking distance after Monday’s opening round.

The Stars trail Waccamaw by three strokes, 338-341, heading into tomorrow’s final round. Aynor is third, with a ton of upstate teams packing the top 10.

Southside Christian is fourth, followed by Christ Church, Chapman, St. Joseph’s, Walhalla, Crescent, and Belton-Honea Path.

Aynor’s Ella Kate Barnett was the only player under par on Monday, firing a 71 to lead the individual standings.

Three Mountain View Prep players powered the Stars’ strong showing, with Poppy Dawson shooting 75 to tie for second place with Fox Creek’s Karsyn Herron,.

Arley Jennings carded an 80 to tie for fourth with BHP’s Kate Gunnells, and Olivia Jones shooting 82 to tie Southside Christian’s Katelyn Cubbison for seventh.

Other golfers in the top 10 include Waccamaw’s Kayla Holek in sixth and Elizabeth Ashcraft, who’s tied with Christ Church’s Isabella Poore for ninth.
