Bennett Scaletta’s trophy case isn’t empty.

As a rising junior at Hanna High School in Anderson, Scaletta could match his trophies with just about any junior golfer in South Carolina.

He already holds the Jay Haas Junior Player of the Year award, shares in three high school team championships, and one individual state title of his own.

Now, after two rounds of the South Carolina Junior Championship at Forest Lake Club in Columbia, Scaletta sits atop the leaderboard.

With another strong round, he might need to rearrange his trophy case to make room for another prize.

Scaletta came out hot, carding birdies on his first two holes. After adding a third birdie on the fourth hole, he overtook first-round leader Sage Bradshaw.

Scaletta followed up his opening-round 68 with a 67 and heads into the final round at 7-under par.

Lancaster’s Banks Steel moved into second place with a 2-under-par 68 and trails Scaletta by three shots.

Scaletta and Steel will be joined in the final group by Charleston’s Hudson Hatch, who also shot a 3-under-par round to tie for third with Dawson Szabo of Greer, who posted an even-par 71.

The cut was made at 14-over par, and 72 juniors will advance to play the final round on Thursday.
