Gaffney High School golfer Daniel Price and Hanna High golfer Cal Harbin got off to fast starts in the opening round of the Henry Transou Memorial at the Cherokee National Country Club.
Price birdied his first hole and Harbin one upped him with an eagle and the two spent the day trading the lead before both finished with a 3-under par 69 total and the top spots going into the final round.
While the 3-under par round was good enough for the lead it did not slow down the rest of the field,
While Harbin struggled to stay in the lead Spartanburg High School golfer Emmet Walsh eagled his first hole to join Price t the front of the field.
Neither golfer was able to break through, but on the first playoff hole Walsh hit a near perfect second shot into birdie range and tolled in the 12 foot putt for the playoff win.
“I didn’t have any nerves in the playoff,” said Walsh. “I just played the hole the way I normally did. I birdied it during the final round and did the same thing in the playoff,” said the winner,
The win in “The Henry” was the first junior championship for the Spartanburg High School sophomore.
Greenville’s Thomas Demint finished at 1-under par to take third place while first round co-leader Harbin dropped back into a fourth place with Inman’s Will McCraw and Greenwood;s Bryson McCurry tied for fifth place.
