Emily Rapp has won the last three Greater Greenville Ladies Amateur championships she has played. However, there was a nine year gap between her second and third victory.
Rapp returned to the tournament and the top of the leader board with two record setting rounds at the 2015 Greenville Ladies Amateur. She added this year’s title at Fox Run Country Club to the 2005 and 2006 championships she had already won.
“I had a couple of weeks off and I wanted to play in an event. I got my entry in late and it worked out nicely,” said the three time champion.
The Mauldin High grad has been around a lot of golf, but she hasn’t played much. Rapp has been a caddie on the Symetra and LPGA Tour for the last two years.
“Being a caddie doesn’t leave a lot of time for me to practice my own game. I was glad I was able to compete. I haven’t played much since college so it feels good to be back in it,” she said.
Rapp opened the tournament with a 4-under par 68 to hold a five shot lead. She added to the lead with an even better 5-under par 67 for a 135 total. The former College of Charleston golfer won the title by 10 shots.
Her opening round broke the existing women’s record at Fox Run and her second round broke the record she set the day before.
“The first day I didn’t feel like I was doing anything special. I was hitting greens, rolling good puts and my driver has been pretty good both days,” she said.
Rapp held a five shot lead over 2012 champion Pam Prescott going into the final round. Ashley Carrell and Stephanie Johnson, who each shot opening round scores of 2-over par 74 to be in the final group.
The first nine holes of the second round gave Rapp the cushion she need to cruise to the title. She birdied the first two holes and added a chip in eagle on the seventh hole.
“I felt awesome about the front side today. It was a pretty good start,” she said.
Rapp has a bobble late in the round or her score and margin of victory would have been even greater.
Carrell shot a 2-under par 70 to move up to second place while Prescott carded a 75 to drop one spot back. Taylor Lance finished in fourth place while Bella Harris was fifth in the championship flight.
“Each win feels good. These ladies are so supportive and they always wish you luck, so I felt pretty good out here doing what I’m doing,” concluded the champion.
