NEW SCORING INFORMATION ADDED AT 11 PM.
The Daniel Lions are in the hunt. The team from Clemson is just nine shots behind the defending AAAA champions from St. James.
Daniel shot a school record round to open the championship on the Barony Course at Port Royal in Hilton Head.
“We shot a 310 total and that is the best in the history of the school,” said Daniel golf coach Andy Swords. St. James is a great team and they still have the lead, but we wanted to be close and compete and we did just that today,” he said.
Daniel finished third in the championship two years ago and after winning the Upstate AAAA title at Southern Oaks set their aim on a higher finish this year.
Smith Knaffle of St. James is the individual leader. She shot a 4-under par 68 to hold a 4-shot lead over Katie Whitfield of Daniel.
“Katie had a very good round and shot a 72. We also had two other golfers in the 70s. Gillian O’Brien shot 76 and Emiliegh Swords had a 77,” said the coach.
Four golfers are tied for third place behind Knaffle and Whitfield after shooting rounds of 76.
Daniel’s O’Brien, Kennedy McGaha from BHP and Jordan White and Jordan Guyton all are at 4-over par.
Hartsville is third with Pickens in fourth place and Chapin in fifth place.
