Palmetto State High School teams are one step away from playing for the state championship. Upstate teams will compete in the qualifying tournament to advance to the state finals on Monday.
While being an Upstate champion is worth mentioning it does not carry any official award or benefit. It allows the team to advance to the state finals just like several others from the classification.
The AAAAA tournament will be played at Woodfin Ridge in Boiling Springs, AAAA at Furman and AAA at Three Pines Country Club in Woodruff.
Earlier this week teams played in their conference or region tournaments to advance to the Upper State qualifying tournament.
Wade Hampton High School won the Region I AAAAA tournament. It was the first region title for the Generals since 2003 and sends the team to the Upper State qualifying tournament.
The AAAAA Classification will have a new champion as the defending champions from Gaffney did not advance out of the Region II tournament. The Indians will be represented by last year’s individual runner-up Seth Taylor.
Advancing from Region I with Wade Hampton are Woodmont, Easley, Hanna and Mann.
Region II sends Mauldin, Spartanburg, Dorman, Riverside and Boiling Springs to the qualifying tournament at Woodfin Ridge.
Rock Hill, Fort Mill, Nation Ford from Region III and Blythewood and Sumter from Region IV will also be at Woodfin Ridge on Monday.
Chesnee won Region II AAA championship. The Eagles were led by Garrettt Cooper who was named the golfer of the year in the region.
Joining Chesnee in the Upper State qualifier will be Chapman and Broome from the region.
The Region I champions from West-Oak along with Seneca, Powdersville and Crescent will be attempting to make the state finals.
Region III was won by Woodruff with Mid-Carolina Clinton and Emerald advancing to the Upper State along with Camden and Indian Land from Region IV.
Blue Ridge won the tough Region II AAAAA championship. Individually Perry Hartin from Travelers Rest won the Region individual championship.
Also advancing from the region are Eastside, Travelers Rest, Greenville, Greer and Berea.
Region I will send Palmetto, Walhalla, Wren, Daniel, Pickens and BHP to Furman. Last year’s AAAA individual champion Brandon Masters from Wren will defend his individual champion.
Lancaster, South Pointe, York, Westwood and Ridge View advanced from Region III.
AC Flora has won 14 state titles and will be trying to win number 15.
The state championships will be held on May 13 – 14th. The AAAAA championship will be played at Lexington, the AAAA championship will be played on the Barony course at Shipyard Plantation on Hilton Head. The AAA championship will be decided at the Camden Country Club.
