High School Golf Season Begins

The first day the South Carolina High School League rules allos golf teams to begin competition saw 20 teams tee off at the Greenville Country Club in the Red Raider Invitational.

The tournament has been a starting gun for high school teams chasing state titles in a 10 week season that will end with championship tournaments in May.

Mauldin High School makes the first headlines for the new season opening the year by posting a 299 total to claim a 5-shot win at Greenville’s Riverside course.

The Mavericks were led by Lleyton Renner. The future PC golfer shot an impressive 5-under par 67 to claim medalist honors.

Lleyton Renner from Mauldin shot a 5-under par 67 to win the season opening Red Raider Invitational at the Greenville Country Club.

The 2019 Upstate Junior champion edged out Greenville’s Tip Price for the top spot. Price, who won his age group division title at the Augusta National Drive, Chip and Putt competition shot 4-under par 68.

Neither of the first two golfers had any margin of error over the rest of the field.

Wade Hampton’s Jonathan Brennan carded a 3-under par 69 and helped his team to a runner-up finish.

Drew Harrill from Spartanburg and Will Esmacher from Riverside tied for fourth pace at 1-under par 71.

Zander Briggs from Woodmont finished in sixth place with a 1-over par 73. Aiden Tugman from Daniel was seventh at 2-over par 74.

Logan Hawkins from Woodmont, Andrew Gregory from Boiling Springs and defending Greenville County High School champion Calahan Keever from Eastside all tied for 8th place.

Wade Hampton followed Mauldin on the leader board. The Generals posted a 305 total to lock up second place.

Greenville, the host team, shot a 315 total to finish third while Byrnes nipped Spartanburg by a shot for fourth place with a 318 total.

The All-Tournament team included Renner, Price, Brennan, Harrill and Esmacher.

The Wade Hampton Generals finished as the runner-up at the Red Raider Invitational. Team members included Jonathan Brennan, Coan Luquire, Eli Gosnell, Eli Ricker, Grayson Hall.

The Red Raider Invitational host team from Greenville finished third. Team members included Tip Price, Thomas Fridy, Robert Cassels, Hugh Faulkner, Jack Pitts, Coach Andrew Newton.
