Drew Harrill posted a very good score in the first round of the Grant Bennett Florence Junior invitational and an even better score in the second round.

But the way the Spartanburg golfer started his second round gave little indication he would have the lead at the end of the day.

“I started off pretty slow,” Harrill said. “I bogeyed my second and third holes making a 30 footer for the bogey on the par 3,” he added.

Harrill got back on track with two straight birdies on numbers 13 and 14, but gave a shot back with another bogey on number 15 before cutting two shots off par on the last two holes of his opening nine.

“I made birdies on 17 and 18 to finish the side and just kind of carried it over to the next side,” he said.

On his second round back nine (front nine at Florence) Harrill made it four birdies in a row and would card 5-birdies in a 7-hole stretch to catch Green.

An eagle on the par-five eighth hole (his 17th hole of day) and a par on the final hole earned Harrill a 1-shot led at the end of the second round.

Adding his 5-under par 66 to his opening round 68 Harrill’s 36 hole total was 8-under par 134.

“I want to go into tomorrow like I have been the past two days, he said. “I just want to have fun and relax and hopefully celebrate when all is said and done,” Harrill added.

While the Spartanburg High School golfer took the lead, Green put together a solid 1-under par round of 70 for a 135 two-day total, one back of Harrill in second.

Adam Hunt from Columbia moved into third place with a second round 1-under par 70 while a pair of Woodruff golfers Daniel Brasington and Trey Howard tied with Aiken’s Cameron Biddle for fourth place,

In the 12-13 year old age group competition Dallas Johnson from Mount Pleasant holds a two shot lead over Walker Felton also from Mount Pleasant.

Owen Atkinson from Columbia leads the 11-12 year old division by 3-shots over Will Ruth from Moore while Connor Wolfe from Blythewood takes a 5-shot lead over Heyward Jennings of Greenville into the final round.

The championship features live scoring with the tournament leaders scheduled to tee off at 9:50 on Friday morning.
