Clontz and Hartin win Upstate titles at Paris Mountain

Ron Clontz and Mike Hartin each won championships at Paris Mountain Country Club.

Clontz won the Upstate Senior title while Hartin claimed the Mid-Am title at the weekend tournament.

Ron Clontz broke out of a tie for the lead after the first round to win the Upstate Senior championship.

Clontz shot a final round even par 72 to win the Upstate Senior title while Mike Hartin took top honors in the Mid-Am event at Paris Mountain Country Club.

Clontz opened the tournament with a 1-over par 73 and shared the lead with Marty Henson after the first round.

Clontz took the second round lead and held on to it with an amazing par on the 16th hole.

“The greens were so fast this weekend that you had to worry about were you would end up if you missed a putt,” he said.

Clontz missed the green on the par-3 hole and was just off the green with his second shot. He faced one of the fastest putts on the course.

“I had about 18 feet, but I couldn’t go straight at it. I had to putt it about 15 feet above the hole and hope it would roll down and at least get close,” he said.

Clontz’s 18 foot putt didn’t get close. It went in for a par to keep his lead.

“I think the ball rolled about 30 feet to make a 15 foot putt,” he said.

Clontz birdied the final hole to finish at even par with a 2-day total of 1-over145.

Mike Hartin won the Mid-Am championship in a playoff with Shane Grumbles.

Hartin trailed Grumbles by 4 shots going into the second round after having trouble finishing off his first round.

“I didn’t play very well at the end of the round. I was 5- under with 4 holes to play and ended up at 1-under,” said Hartin.

In the final round he finished much better with a short birdie putt on 17 and a difficult 20 foot birdie on 18 to force the playoff.

Hartin birdied the playoff hole to win another tournament at Paris Mountain.

Hartin had won one of the two annual Traynham tournaments played at the course each year since 2017.

With his win in the  Mid-Am, Hartin has now won events in four straight years.

“I’ve been in a bit of slump with my short game, but I hit some good shots when I needed them,” said the Mid-Am champion.

Bo Ream finished in third place with Tyler Macolly in fourth. Marcus Grumbles won the Mid-Am First Fight.

Mike Hartin has won a tournament at Paris Mountain Country Club each of the last four years.
