USC Upstate wins Big South awards

The USC Upstate Women’s golf team had a record setting year. The accomplishments of the Spartans has been recognized by the Big South Conference with a number of season ending awards.

Upstate put four golfers on the All-Conference team and won the freshman of the year and coach of the year awards.

Upstate freshman Praew Nontarux earned Big South Freshman of the Year honors. Nontarux is the first USC Upstate golfer to be named Freshman of the Year in the Big South era.

Nontarux became the first player in Big South history to be named Freshman of the Week on nine different occasions. The freshman recorded four Top-10 finishes and a pair of Top-5 finishes on the year.

Nontarux also recorded a pair of runner-up finishes in the Low Country Intercollegiate and at the Caledonia GolfWeek Spring Invitational. Nontarux was also named to the All-Conference and All-Freshman Team.

Suwarin Yord-In joined Nontarux on the All-Conference and All-Freshman honors team. She started out her career at Upstate with a bang as she won the first tournament she ever competed in and ended the year with four Top-10s and a Top-5.

Beem Pabsimma earned All-Conference honors after winning the Big South Championship. The sophomore earned the Big South automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals and became the first female golfer in program history to make it to a regional.

Pabsimma ended the season on a hot streak, winning her final two tournaments of the Spring 2021 season she also recorded 3 Top-5 finishes and 4 Top-10 finishes this season.

Pan Paksanont earned All-Conference honors and All-Academic team honors this season. The senior will go down in program history as one of the best to ever play at USC Upstate. This season Paksanont posted a scoring average of 75.87 and recorded a trio of Top-10 finishes. The senior also had a Top-five finish earlier this year.

Upstate men’s and women’s coach Todd Lawton was recognized as the Big South Women’s coach of the year.

This year the Spartans established several new school records for wins and scores .

Upstate finished as the runner-up in the conference stroke play tournament.

The Spartans won three tournaments in the Spring season.

It was the first time in the history of the women’s golf program the team won multiple events in the same season.
