The Dorman Cavaliers won the WSCGA Junior Golf Foundation championship at Moss Creek Plantation near Hilton Head. The Cavaliers had a strong second round to take the championship from first round leader Chesnee.

Dorman’s been a second-day team in two-day tournaments so far this season.

Sunday worked out much the same way.

The Cavaliers shot a second-day 342 at the Women’s South Carolina Golf Association Junior Golf Foundation High School Invitational on Sunday, winning the event at Hilton Head’s Moss Creek Golf Club by six strokes over May River, 689-695.

“I definitely feel like we’re a second-day team,” Dorman coach Laura Maurer said. “The girls played incredibly well in a team format this weekend, and relied on each other when they had a bad hole. They were mentally tough, and they knew their teammates would carry them and they could bounce back on the next hole.”

Maurer said she thinks Dorman’s mental focus is a product of the way the Cavaliers approach longer tournaments.

“I think we like to know where we stand,” she said. “Going into the second day, we know where we are. And our mental game is one of our strengths. We do a lot of mental coaching, and we like to refine the areas where we left shots on the course.”

Londyn Rath led the Cavaliers with an 82 on Sunday, backing up her first-round 78 to tie for eighth overall in the individual standings. Ava Romansky shot 84, AC Peake fired an 87, and Maddie Carraway carded an 89 to round out the scoring and help the Cavaliers overcome a five-shot deficit after the first round.

Chesnee finished third in the event, shooting 700. Chapin was fourth at 703, while T.L. Hanna rounded out the Top 5 at 707.

Hilton Head Prep’s Bridget Wilkie took medalist honors in the event, shooting a two-day total of 148. That included one of just two even par rounds on the second day, with runner-up Marissa Scaletta’s even-par round giving the T.L. Hanna golfer a score of 152.

South Carolina girls High School Championships will be decided later this month.
