ACC tournament called for darkness

The defending ACC Champion Tigers missed out on the opportunity to complete the defense of their title when darkness halted the Match Play championship with Wake Forest. The final between the defending champions from Clemson and the Demon Deacons had four matches remaining on the course when officials stopped play.

Wake Forest had the only point on the scoreboard as Macy Pate had closed out Clemson’s Sydney Roberts 4 & 3.

The Tigers and Deacons each led two of the remaining four matches in progress.

According to the ACC Women’s Golf Manual,  “In the event match play is started, but cannot be completed, the highest remaining seed will be awarded the team championship.”

Clemson had led the first two rounds of stroke play competition, but in the third round, led by medalist Rachel Kuehn, the Deacons caught and passed the Tigers to earn the top seed in the Match Play final.

In one of the semi-finals, Wake Forest topped North Carolina 3 & 2 to advance to the championship.

Clemson and Virginia, the two teams that played for the championship last year, were paired in the other semi-final match.

The Tigers advanced to the finals when Sydney Roberts won the final match on the course with a 1 up victory over Rebbeca Skolar.

As a matter of reference, very few college tournaments are extended past the scheduled days, even if a playoff is needed. The logistics of rearranging accommodations and in many cases travel schedules has led to most college events settling for shared championships for teams and individual medalists or a rule book tiebreaker.

The Tigers finished the season ranked in the top-20 and will learn of their NCAA Regional assignment on Wednesday April 23 when the field is announced on a Golf Channel broadcast at 2 PM.
