Trent Phillips has added another honor to his list of accomplishments. The rising senior at Boiling Springs High School has been named to the USA Today All-Star Boys team.
Phillips was named to the second team.
The USA Today Boys player of the year was Phillips last victim on the golf course.
Eugene Hong of Winter Park, Florida has been known in junior golf circles as “Eugene the Machine” for his outstanding play.
Last weekend at the Haas Family Invitational AJGA tournament at Sedgefield in Greensboro Phillips beat “the Machine.”
The two golfers tied for the lead at the end of regulation play and Phillips was able to defeat the USA Today’s top player with a birdie on the first playoff hole.
Hong, like Phillips, is a rising senior. He will play college golf at Florida. Phillips will play his college golf at Georgia so chances are the two will meet again in the future.
The national newspaper listed its criteria for selection to their 12 member All-Star High School team.
From USA Today – The 2016-17 American Family Insurance ALL-USA Boys Golf Teams were selected based on performance and level of competition primarily at the high school level. Junior golf success was a secondary consideration, and those who did not compete regularly for their high school were not considered. Players from states that play in the fall or spring were eligible for selection.
