Patton added to US Amateur field

Clemson’s Colby Patton has ben added to the field for this years Amateur in Oregon starting on August 10th.

The US Amateur has added a ninth area college player to the field for the championship to be played at Bandon Dunes in Oregon.

Clemson rising senior Colby Patton is the latest Palmetto State golfer to join the field of 264 golfers that will begin play on August 10th.

The Covid-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of US Amateur qualifying tournaments around the country.

Instead the USGA extended invitations to golfers based on the World Golf Amateur Rankings and some special exemptions.

The pandemic has caused a number of the top amateurs in the world to be unable to accept an invitation to compete because of travel issues.

Clemson’s Chris Patton won the 1989 US Amateur and went on to play in the Masters before beginning his professional golf career.

Patton, who’s father Chris won the 1989 US Amateur, joins eight other golfers with South Carolina connections  at the Amateur.

Georgia All-American Trent Phillips from  Boiling Springs and Clemson Honorable Mention All-American Jacob Bridgeman will be making the trip to Bandon Dunes in Oregon for the national championship.

Phillips earned first team All-American honors in his second season at Georgia. He is ranked 39th in the World Golf Amateur Rankings.

During the last season Phillips won his first college tournament, earned All-SEC honors for the second time and had the lowest stroke average on the team.

Bridgeman earned Honorable Mention All-American recognition in his second year at Clemson.

He finished the pandemic shortened season as the Tigers top golfer, winning the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate at the Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken.

The Clemson golfer from Inman played in the US Amateur last year at Pinehurst.

Phillips’ brother and Bridgeman’s Tiger teammate are two more invitees.

Clemson senior Turk Pettit will be playing in his second US Amateur. Also a Georgia golfer, Trevor Phillips  got his invitation based on his World Amateur Golf Ranking.

Two Gamecock golfers, Jamie Wilson and Ryan Hall both have accepted opportunities to play in the Amateur.

Coastal Carolina’s Zach Taylor will compete at Bandon Dunes as will College of Charleston’s Logan Sowell.

The US Amateur will be played at the Bandon Dunes Golf Club August 10th to the 16th.

Former Clemson All-American Corbin Mills won the 2011 USGA Public Links Championship at the course.
