Boiling Springs and Flora favored to repeat as SC champions

The South Carolina Golf Coaches pre-season poll is out and if the poll turns out to be correct, Boiling Springs and Flora will be adding to their list of championships.

Here is how the rankings are determined by the Golf Coaches.

Polls will be adjusted after compiling data from sanctioned tournaments that have been completed and match play results that were in the media or supplied to the SCHSGCA.

Polls will be released on or around the 15th of each month with the exception of the month of May when polls will be released after Upper and Lower State tournaments.

Coaches are asked to report scores from tournaments or 9-hole matches to SCHSGCA board members.

Last year the Bulldogs won the AAAAA title by a single shot over Chapin.

The difference came down to a 17th hole birdie by Andrew Gregory to wrap up the win.

Gregory went on to win the SCJGA Haas Award as Junior Player of the Year in South Carolina and the future Liberty University golfer is back to lead the Bulldogs this season.

This year the poll predicts Chapin to be in the hunt once again along with veteran teams from Spartanburg and Mauldin.

AC Flora never seems to rebuild instead they reload.

Last year, before the state championship, Falcon’s coach Robert Dargan’s goal for his team was for every player in the championship to make the All-State team.

And they did while adding a second straight AAAA title.

Flora won by a 40 shot victory margin and several of the All-State golfers return to compete for the 2023 championship.

North Augusta and Greenville both return teams that have state championship experience and are ranked right behind Flora.

The coaches poll gives the early season nod to Beaufort in the AAA ranks, while second ranked Woodruff may be the team to beat in the classification because the state championship will be played on their home course at Three Pines.

In the AA-A Poll Christ Church is in an unfamiliar spot well down in the rankings.

The defending champions arguably have the best player in the state in William Jennings, but the supporting cast is thinner than in past years.

Oceanside and Bishop England are considered the favorites in AA-A according to the poll.

A pair of Pre-Season tournaments on February 27th will include many of the ranked teams in a final tune up for the season.

The Red Raider Invitational at the Greenville Country Club and the Fort Dorchester Invitational at Westcott Plantation on February 27th, are considered pre-season tournaments, but will give an early indication as to how accurate the pre-season rankings are from the coaches.

The first major tournament is the Byrnes Rebel Invitational on March 6th at River Falls Plantation.
